Book Review: The Shining by Stephen King

Book Review: The Shining, By Stephen King

Hope everyone is having a great Labor Day weekend. For me it’s been an opportunity to check out my library, take the guesswork out, and settle in with a book I enjoyed so much the first time around. I just finished re-reading Stephen King's The Shining, and Wow all over again!

Thrilling, terrifying, edge of my seat. The Shining follows Jack Torrance, a struggling writer and recovering alcoholic, who takes a job as the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel, a secluded resort in the Colorado mountains that’s closed for the winter months. Along with his wife Wendy and son Danny (a psychic), Jack hopes to find peace and inspiration in the hotel. Yeah, right, in a novel by Stephen King?! Evil is lurking in every room of this place, and before I knew it, Jack found himself in … well … you’ll have to figure that one out for yourselves. Hint: “Here’s Johnny!”

The Shining is a masterpiece of suspense, horror, and psychological fiction. King's writing is superb, the story filled to the brim with vivid characters, atmospheric settings, and chilling scenes that were still haunting me when I finished the last chapter and sat down to write this review.

I highly recommend The Shining to anyone who loves horror, or anyone in need of just a good story per se. It's one of those books that you can read time and again, and discover something new. I’d also recommend this novel for fall reading when the nights cool off and we throw the blankets on. I picked a cool, breezy night, but had to keep the lights on…
