Jersey on my mind … Lucy the Elephant …
The setting for one of my all-time favorite novels, Atlantic City Proof by Christopher Cook Gilmore, 1978, Simon and Schuster.
The story of Garvey Leek, an innocent teenager who grows up in Lucy the Elephant, meets another teen, the irrepressible orphan Minnie Creek, who teaches him the business of clamming. How they became the most successful bootleggers during Prohibition is nothing short of magic. Very surreal and thrilling book with characters way ahead of their time. A very classy understanding of the world. Fellini meets Mark Twain. Absolutely loved it.
