There are good reasons why any author might consider self-publishing. A new writer might be having difficulty getting an agent. A published author might have a backlist that could use attention, new book jacket designs or a fresh marketing plan.
But consider one more reason. Consider Francis Ford Coppola. After writing Patton, after writing and directing The Godfather, The Conversation, and Godfather Part II, after winning five Oscars for Writing, Directing, and Best Picture, no one would get behind what he wanted to do next! Said Coppola, “If you want to make something personal, you have to put up the money yourself.” And so he did. Apocalypse Now, a DIY masterpiece. He self-published a movie, because it had to be written. For Coppola, it’s what came next.
